Chapter Seven
"Zandra, the next time you move, it had damn well better be in the middle of winter," Carter said. He huffed as he set down the box full of bricks in the driveway. It was more likely full of books, but it was certainly heavy enough to be bricks. The top of the box was covered in dust from the attic where most of Jerry and Zan's belongings had been stashed when they'd moved back home several months before.
"Well, if you're that insistent, we can put it off for a few more months," Zan said, grinning at him. She tossed him a bottle of water, and Carter barely caught it before it smacked him in the face.
"No, no, the sooner you're gone, the better," Carter said, making a face at her. Her hair was tucked back under an old cotton scarf with black and brown swirls decorating it, and she wore a tank top and shorts like Carter did. Also like Carter, she was sweating like crazy. The day was a little too nice; the sun was hot and bright in the sky, beating down insistently with no clouds in sight to break the heat. "But why do you have so much stuff?"
"I ask myself that every time we move," Zandra said, making a face right back. She mopped at her forehead before heading back toward the house. "I'm going to kill Amelia and Ned, though. They said they'd be here by now. If they bail..."
"We'll break their A/C units," Carter said. He glanced toward the street, but there was no sign of either of Zan's friends. There was also no sign of Tai, but Carter had told him to show up at eleven, and it was only about nine.
Zandra laughed, climbing the steps to the house. "At least ma is gone. She texted me some nonsense last night about keeping Tashi away from the basement, so I think she's having fun."
"I didn't get any drunk texts." Carter paused inside the slightly-cooler interior of the house to drink down half the bottle of water Zandra had thrown at him. There was one new box at the base of the stairs that led to the second floor, and Carter headed for it. "Back to staging?"
"I guess," Zandra said, sighing. She ducked into the kitchen briefly and came out with a fresh bottle of water. She headed for the stairs, taking them two at a time. Jerry was pulling boxes from the attic and bringing them to the second floor, where Zandra was taking them to the first floor, and Carter was bringing them out to his truck.
Carter lost track of time while he brought box after box out to the truck. He arranged them as best he could, packing in the gaps between the bed and sidewalls with old blankets. Finally, the truck was just about full, Carter bringing the last box that would fit out to the truck. He'd just shoved it into place when he heard footsteps climbing the stone drive.
